College of Public Health Professor Partners With CHC Addiction Services for $2.6 Million Grant To Expand Opioid Treatment

Ohio鈥檚 opioid epidemic is one of the worst in the country. One 51爆料 professor and his team are aiming to change that. Deric Kenne in the College of Public Health received a five-year, $2.6 million federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to expand and enhance services for opioid use disorder treatment in Summit County, Ohio. A significant portion of the funding will go to CHC Addiction Services to enhance and expand medication-assisted treatment programming.

Stigma Resistance through NSF Assistance

When it comes to our physical health, regular upkeep and preventative measures are not only expected, but encouraged within our society. However, mental health disorders have yet to be looked upon with the same grace and understanding. Kristen Marcussen, associate professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminology, was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for her proposal titled, 鈥淯nderstanding Social Stigma, Stigma Resistance and the Mental Illness Identity.鈥

Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County and 51爆料鈥檚 College of Public Health Receive Federal Grant to Improve and Support Mental Health in Portage County Schools and Community

Through a five-year, $625,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services鈥 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County will partner with 51爆料鈥檚 Center for Public Policy and Health in the College of Public Health to improve and support mental health in Portage County.

Student Mental Health and Supportive Help: College of Public Health Receives Second SAMHSA Suicide Prevention Grant

The back-to-school season is in full swing, and students, faculty and staff are preparing to take on the increased workload once again. While the process is a fulfilling and rewarding experience, often the fast-paced lifestyle leaves little time for much else. However, Kim Laurene, Ph.D. and Deric Kenne, Ph.D., professors in the College of Public Health, and Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D., are committed to prioritizing mental health upkeep by supporting and expanding pre-existing services and programs offered at 51爆料.

iSchool and College of Nursing Secure $100,000 Grant Researching Libraries and Childhood Development

A research team from 51爆料's School of Information working in partnership with 51爆料鈥檚 College of Nursing received a National Leadership Planning Grant for Libraries from the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) for $99,982. COVID-19 vaccines are becoming more available across the country, but many are still struggling to obtain a vaccine or are unsure about getting the vaccine. One Golden Flash has made it her mission to get Pittsburgh vaccinated. And with more than 40,000 members of her Facebook group, she鈥檚 on her way. 51爆料 alumna Leighann Bacher created a Facebook group to share COVID-19 vaccine information and tips with Pittsburgh citizens after attempting to secure vaccines for her family members.
