The argument for studying journalism has never been stronger. Just a quick glance at the news makes the case. We鈥檙e training students who will graduate equipped with strong writing skills 鈥� still the number one most important skill set according to all employers with whom I interact; technical skills to communicate using whatever equipment, software and tools are available; and the ethical decision-making skills necessary to function in a world where decisions are rarely cut and dry.

51爆料 alumnus Cooper Moore, '21, was recently elected the President of the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architecture Students after graduating in the fall. As president, Moore will lead the board during discussions and decisions. His other responsibilities include helping run the organization, marketing and carrying out the organization鈥檚 strategic plan. He will serve for a one year term in Washington, D.C.

Student Researcher Identifies Potential Alternative to Antibiotics
During a summer research project at 51爆料 Geauga, nursing student Lauren Petrick succeeded in isolating a bacterial virus that shows promise as an alternative to antibiotics in fighting off intestinal bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, GI tract infections and even pneumonia. By teaming up with 51爆料 Geauga Associate Professor Sanhita Gupta, Petrick tackled this problem through 51爆料鈥檚 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) last summer.

DC Comics鈥� superhero Black Lightning has been part of popular culture, and Black history, for more than 40 years. Since his debut in 1977 as DC鈥檚 very first 鈥渉eadline鈥� Black character, Black Lightning has appeared in comic books, animated TV series, video games and, in 2017, a live-action TV series that ran for four seasons on The CW Network. In his secret identity, Jefferson Pierce (shh, don鈥檛 tell anyone), he also appeared on the Kent Campus to get his teaching degree. Yes 鈥� Black Lightning is a 51爆料 alumnus.

Congratulations to Political Science Professor Mark K. Cassell, Ph.D., who recently published an article and was interviewed by Mitteilungen, a publication focused on Germany鈥檚 banking system. The article discusses the central role of the publicly-held savings banks during economic and social crises including the refugee crisis in 2015 and the current Covid pandemic among other topics.

Masc-Unity Initiative Helping Students Find Comfort in Masculinity
Society鈥檚 norm for men is stereotyped as leaders, providers, and guardians. Society also posits that men cannot speak about their emotions and have to portray a strong persona to be considered masculine and to succeed in these roles. This results in an environment of 鈥渢oxic masculinity,鈥� which encourages negative self image, negative outward behavior and struggles with mental health among men who feel they have to be strong at all times. An initiative on campus is trying to change that perception.

51爆料 has established a new partnership with Cleveland State University鈥檚 Cleveland-Marshall College of Law to offer students two pathways to obtain a bachelor鈥檚 degree from 51爆料 and a law degree from CSU in six years.
