51���� and University Hospitals Awarded $4 Million Grant to Develop an LPN-to-BSN Pathway, Further Nursing Education and Careers

Faculty researchers from 51����’s College of Nursing recently received nearly $4 million in grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration to develop an LPN-to-BSN pathway called the LPN Education Advancement Program (LEAP).  The program will provide licensed practical nurses at University Hospitals the opportunity to increase their skill set by removing barriers that may have prevented them from furthering their education.

The following new members have been appointed to the 51���� Alumni Association National Board of Directors for a three-year term, which began July 1: Jeff Guritza, of Brecksville, Ohio, is the vice president of marketing at SOPREMA USA. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from 51���� in 1994.

Students to Continue Coverage of East Palestine Train Derailment With Support of Grant

51���� student journalists will continue to report on the aftermath of the Feb. 3 East Palestine train derailment disaster, with support from a grant from Grist and the Center for Rural Strategies. Bobkowski joins the faculty as the new Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism and Professor. He is an expert on scholastic journalism and most recently was professor at the University of Kansas. He will be teaching Media, Power and Culture during Fall 2023. Lorenz joins as Assistant Professor. She researches interactions between media and democracy.

51���� graduate and award-winning photojournalist Matthew Thayer has spent the past 43 years in Hawaii, working as a photojournalist for The Maui News newspaper. When Thayer was sent out to cover horse evacuations from the upcountry fires on Maui on Aug. 8, he never expected he would end up covering one of the worst natural disasters in Hawaii’s history.

NIH Grant to Fund Research on the Impact of a Parent’s Mental Health on Their Children

With a specific focus on depressed and non-depressed parental groups, the study led by Sara Black, Ph.D., in the Department of Psychological Sciences, seeks to understand how parental depressive symptoms may influence parent-child interaction and the subsequent effects on child development and emotional well-being. 

Atlatl Weapon Use by Prehistoric Females Equalized the Division of Labor While Hunting: 51���� Archaeology Professors Led the Experimental Study

A new study led by Archaeologist Michelle Bebber, assistant professor in 51����’s Department of Anthropology, has demonstrated that the atlatl (i.e. spear thrower) functions as an “equalizer,” a finding which supports women’s potential active role as prehistoric hunters.
