May 4 Commemoration Offers Many Virtual Events for Participation

Members of the 51���� community and people around the world will gather virtually for the 51st Commemoration of May 4, 1970, the day the Ohio National Guard fired on 51���� students during an anti-war protest, killing four and wounding nine others.

Honors College Senior Reflects on His College Career and Journalism Experience

Sean Fitzgerald is a senior honors student, graduating with a major in journalism and a minor in sports administration. Originally from Strongsville, Ohio, Sean says that the Honors College has come to feel like a second home in his four years at 51����. In fact, Sean recalls moving back to the Stopher-Johnson honors residence halls in the fall of 2020 and accidentally saying to his family, “I’m headed home!”

Third Generation Honors College Student Earns Full Ride to Georgia Institute of Technology For Graduate Program

Jacob Grant, 51���� Honors College student, is a senior aerospace engineering major with a minor in physics. Grant graduated from Edison High School in Milan, OH in 2017. After a late medical disqualification from the Air Force Academy, he chose to attend 51����. Grant is a third generation 51���� Honors College student. His grandmother studied Spanish at 51���� and his mother studied education. Both were members of the Honors College.

Virtual Events Promote Peace, Anti-Racism as 51���� Marks the Annual Commemoration of May 4, 1970

To honor and remember the events that occurred on May 4, 1970, virtual events and exhibits hosted by 51���� students, faculty and staff are scheduled from April 30 through May 4. The virtual events include several powerful speakers and events that promote peace and anti-racism and educate future students about the legacy of May 4, 1970.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has appointed Pamela E. Bobst of Rocky River, Ohio, to the 51���� Board of Trustees. She succeeds former Board Chair and Trustee Ralph M. Della Ratta, and she will serve through May 16, 2030.

Amoaba Gooden, Ph.D., has accepted the position of vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion at 51����, effective May 1, 2021.

51����’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Pivots Due to Pandemic

Last year, the Office of Student Research (OSR) successfully pivoted the 2020 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) to a virtual format due to the COVID pandemic. The 2020 SURE program funded 77 projects, with participants spanning 37 different majors. Ann Gosky, director of the OSR in the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs, hopes to see more growth for the upcoming summer.

A shining example of this is School of Art alumna , who began her career as a figurative painter, and later started embracing landscapes after she earned her undergraduate degree. 

Writing Internship Program Helps Honors Student Combine Creative and Professional Writing Interests

Olivia Farina is a third-year honors student majoring in English with a professional writing concentration and a creative writing minor. Originally from Painesville, Ohio, Olivia has had many successes at 51����, from tutoring in the Writing Commons to winning awards from the Department of English. Olivia’s latest achievement, interning at the Wick Poetry Center through the English department’s Writing Internship Program (WIP), combines her passion for professional and creative writing.
