Technology Requirement

In order to be successful in the program, students must have:

  • Personal laptop, preferably a MacBook Pro or a comparable PC that can handle video and animations.
  • Subscription to LinkedIn Learning (51±¬ÁÏ supplies LinkedIn Learning campus subscription with enrollment).
  • Subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign, XD, Muse and Edge Animate) and MS Office or Apple's iWork Suite.
  • Other software may include Sketch, InVision, Transmit (or another FTP client), Text Edit, Balsamiq, Axure or Omnigraffle.

Full Description

The Child and Youth Practice minor teaches students how to work effectively with children and adolescents as well as their families in a variety of settings, including, but not limited to, residential treatment, group care, community youth services, foster care and after-school programs. Students learn how to promote positive youth development within diverse communities through developmentally appropriate programming that emphasizes the strengths and resources youth bring with them. Graduates of the minor leave with the skills needed to develop and share the support services that children and young adults need to be successful, overcome challenges and thrive.

Students majoring in Psychology, Sociology, Human Development and Family Science, Communication Studies, Criminology and Justice Studies, Community or School Health Education, as well as students in the visual and performing arts, may be interested in the Child and Youth Practice minor to strengthen their unique capacity to work successfully with young people and their families.

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). To declare this minor, students must have attempted a minimum 12 credit hours at 51±¬ÁÏ and earned a minimum 2.000 overall 51±¬ÁÏ GPA. Students who have not attempted 12 credit hours at 51±¬ÁÏ will be evaluated for admission based on their high school GPA for new students or transfer GPA for transfer students. Transfer students who have not attempted 12 credit hours of college-level coursework at 51±¬ÁÏ and/or other institutions will be evaluated based on both their high school GPA and college GPA.
