We are proud to spotlight Arslan Kalandrov; a hardworking sophomore double-majoring in International Studies and Human Development & Family Science. He works as both a Facility Supervisor and Guest Services Specialist. For him, working at 51爆料鈥檚 Recreation and Wellness services has been a place where he鈥檚 grown, connected with others, and gained confidence.
Upon his arrival in the United States, Arslan described himself as shy, as he was still adapting to the new environment. Through his job search of applying for several on-campus jobs, he was immediately drawn to RecWell and what the department had to offer. He was reminded of the work he had done at a home company, and he saw it as a bridge to build his skills aligned with his long-term goals. 鈥淭he patrons are nice, and the team is always supportive. Everyone is ready to help.鈥 Being welcomed sealed the deal for his role.
During Arslan鈥檚 time at RecWell, he has gained critical communication, empathy, and leadership skills. By the daily interactions he has with patrons, he has learned how to speak professionally and solve unexpected problems with confidence. As a Facility Supervisor, he has collaborated with other program areas 鈥 such as Aquatics 鈥 to ensure smooth operations and strengthen his teamwork abilities in the process.
Arslan expresses his appreciation for the diverse environment here at RecWell. Noticing staff and patrons are from different backgrounds and countries has taught him to approach every interaction with awareness and understanding. This has helped Arslan grow both personally and professionally as a future global professional, recognizing cultural differences.
Arslan recounts a moment where he felt as if he made a difference, responding to his first emergency. Despite the injury not being severe, he performed well and felt reassured after overcoming a fear. 鈥淚 was very proud of myself for saving someone,鈥 he explains, 鈥淓ven though it was a small injury, a small change makes a difference.鈥
Arslan remembers the times when he saw many opportunities here at the Rec when finding his current position and encourages students not to give up when applying because they may find the perfect role for them. He emphasizes that it is a place to discover hidden strengths, build customer service skills, make friends, and professionally advance. To him, RecWell brought something out of him he did not recognize before.
A fun fact about Arslan? He speaks six languages 鈥 English, Turkish, Russian, Spanish, and Sign Languages. His eagerness to expand his knowledge ties perfectly with his passion for international studies.
