The Africana Studies minor introduces students to the experiences and accomplishments of people of African descent, wherever they may be throughout the world. The minor complements majors that prepare students to work in areas such as education, law, law enforcement, public service, social work, research, foreign service, business and community development.

Minor in Africana Studies

The program offers an interdisciplinary approach, covering topics such as African and African diasporic history, literature, politics, and cultural expressions. Designed to complement a wide range of majors, the minor equips students with critical perspectives on issues of race, identity, and social justice, enhancing their ability to engage thoughtfully in both academic and professional settings involving African and African American communities.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  2. Interact with diverse communities and be informed and engaged global citizens.
  3. Relate current political and social issues facing the Africana world to global historical events.
  4. Read, analyze and critically articulate the contemporary socioeconomic, political and cultural issues facing people of African descent.

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.
